On Thursday, 26 of September 2013, KISA – Action for Equality, Support, Antiracism is organising a seminar and public discussion on “Detention and Deportation at Europe’s Borders: The Case of the Republic of Cyprus.”
The seminar focuses upon the conditions of detention and deportation of undocumented migrants in Cyprus and in Europe. Among the speakers there will be representatives of the competent services (such as the Human Rights Office of the Cyprus Police Headquarters) and independent authorities (such as the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture under the Office of the Commissioner for Administration), international and national non-governmental organisations (Migreurop, Open Access Network, and KISA), as well as former detainees of the Detention Centres of Undocumented Migrants of the Republic of Cyprus. The moderator of the discussion will be Dr. Aristotle Constantinides, Associate Professor of International Law and Human Rights Law in the Law Department of the University of Cyprus.
The seminar is organised in the framework of the programme “The Europeanization of National Asylum and Alien Laws in Cyprus, Italy and Spain: Detention and Detention Centres for Foreigners vs. Return Directive,” in which KISA is participating in cooperation with five other civil society organisations from Germany, Italy, and Spain*. The project has been approved and implemented in the framework of the programme “Europe for Citizens,” which, among other things, aims to raise public awareness on important issues related to the European economic area. In the context of the implementation of the above aims, two seminars and public discussions related to the subject and targets of the programme will be organised.
The first seminar will be organised on Thursday, 26 September 2013, from 16: to 19:00, at the Peace Venue of Nicosia Municipality, at the end of Ledra pedestrian Street. The entrance is free and KISA invites everyone to participate.
