Action Against Discrimination Project
RADIAlert - Report Racism Mechanism
RADIAlert is part of the project and was conceived in order to unravel the magnitude of the problem of racism and discrimination in Cyprus, as well as to foster wider coalitions of civil society and other actors in the field of antiracism in order to effectively combat these phenomena. In addition RADIAlert will raise awareness and sensitise both society and state in order to develop effective defenses and actions to counter the increasing racist, xenophobic and islamophobic discourse and acts in Cyprus. About the project
While Cyprus is becoming a diverse society, and while a lot of work has been done insofar as the legislation framework on anti-discrimination is concerned, the reality is that there is a long way ahead towards the implementation of the principles of anti-discrimination in policies, in public actions and in public and private organizations and businesses. Even more, the sensitization of the general public on issues of equality in view of the economic cirsis is declining. The capacities of male and female professionals working with equality – e.g. business and union executives, managers and trade unionists – need opportunities of advancement. The research based knowledge on discrimination is low. Additionally, as cultural diversity becomes a reality in all areas of life, the workplace is by far the most profound environment where discrimination is practiced. Diversity management, thus, is an imperative need for public and private organizations. Bearing in mind this gap of anti-discrimination practice, the ultimate aim of this project is to challenge the extant state of tradition by (1) assembling experts and professionals from the EU and from Cyprus into a working environment of exchanging good practices, experiences and mutual learning, (2) setting down training modules and carrying out specialized training for professionals working on anti-discrimination, (3) carrying out multiple discrimination research, (4) producing printed, electronic and audiovisual material for dissemination and (5) employing a broad spectrum of means in embedding an anti-discrimination awareness into the general public. The project’s activities aim at addressing all grounds of discrimination. In some activities, though, ethnicity and religious belief will be particularly highlighted.
Project Partners
The project’s partnership is a collaboration of public and private Institutions between the Cyprus Labour Institute (INEK-PEO), the Action for Equality, Support, Antiracism (KISA), the Office of the Commissioner of Administration and Human Rights (Ombudsman) and the Cyprus Academy for Public Administration (CAPA). INEK-PEO is a non-profit organization and its activities are around research and education in equality issues, economy, labour relations and working conditions. The mission of the Department of Equality of INEK is to examine the barriers and the opportunities people encounter in the contemporary society resulting from the determinants of inequality: race, gender, religion, age and sexual orientation. KISA is a non-profit organization and its vision is the promotion of an all-inclusive, multicultural society, free of racism, xenophobia and discrimination. KISA’s action is focused on the fields of Migration, Asylum, Racism, Discrimination and Trafficking, and it includes awareness-raising of the Cypriot society as well as lobbying in order to influence the legal and structural framework, the policies and practices in these fields. The Office of the Ombudsman has the general duty of protecting the rights of citizens when these are affected from actions or decisions of administrative organs which are contrary to the law, violate human rights or do not constitute proper administrative behaviour.CAPA’s mission is to contribute to the efficiency and continuous improvement of the Public Service for the benefit of the individual citizens and society at large through the implementation of a comprehensive learning policy.

Workstream 1: Non-Discrimination Practices and Diversity Management
Workstream 1 lasts for 6 months; it begins in September 2014 and ends up in February 2015
The main objective of the workstream is to bring together experts working on non-discrimination and diversity management from the EU and Cyprus to exchange views and experiences, share good practices from their respective locations and put into the table recommendations for further developments. Additionally, the workstream aims, at a second level, to produce training modules and provide training on non-discrimination and diversity management, respectively, at a broader audience working on the issues such as union and business executives, public authorities’ stakeholders and trade unionists. The purpose of the training sessions is to motivate the social partners to include the issues of equality and diversity in their organizations’ agendas and influence, thus, positive non-discriminatory changes.
